21.08.2023 Monday, How to spot a Whale and Clouds and Ice Floe Walruses
This morning there was panic stations, Master couldn't find his Carabinier watch. We had been given a Hurtigruten Carabinier watch each, it was in our Suite when we arrived. The Missus had been wearing hers since she took it out of the box. Our suite and belongings were turned inside out to find it. Morgan and I feared we were next. Eventually it was found amongst his Lordships pants of all places. Phew!
Master and Missus went up to the Expedition Lounge (deck 10) this morning to catch up with blogging. The Missus is happy she has managed to get the all important app to work on her phone, she is very happy now. Breakfast was in the Lindstrom as usual. Morgan and I went to join them in the Lounge a bit later. We worked so hard that we didn't realise how the time was going, and we had to stop to go down for the lecture at 14.00-14.45 called 'How to Spot a Whale'. Most of us had done that already the day before. It was Fin Whale the Missus saw yesterday. While this lecture was on, a call went up, Ice Floes. We all stood up and looked over our shoulders and saw the Ice through the windows. It would have to wait, the lecture was far more interesting. After the Lecture most people rushed out to see the Ice and take pictures. Missus took several from our private Balcony. It was an impressive sight. We seem to be having a cruise of firsts, with the Whales yesterday, and the Ice today, which they don't normally see early in the cruise. We are having a lovely time. I noticed though the sea was very calm and smooth. The Missus went out to find out more. Apparently the Captain always steers the ship when ice is around, also there is a very strong current too. Again though this is an early sighting, What else awaits us? We have now turned right and the ship is heading roughly East, to the North West Passage and beyond!
Yesterday and this evening there was a knock at the door. It was Ricky our room steward with 2 chocolates. Morgan and I don't get a look in with these treats as they are gobbled up by the Master and Missus! To add insult to injury this evening not only did Ricky turn up with the chocolates, but he gave the Master and Missus a certificate each for crossing the Artic circle. Morgan and I seemed to have been left out, we did cross the Artic Circle too you know!
Todays other lecture about NASA's Globe Cloud Observer project lecture is today at 15.30 to 16.15. It is due to take place in the Science lab but so many people turned up, we sat in the lecture hall. They had never had so much interest in this Citizen science project before. Alas the app wouldn't load properly on the Missus's phone, so we were unable to try it out. So after the talk they went to the Fredheim restaurant and had a light lunch. None of us are being very active so Master had a small Chicken Dish and Missus had a meat topped Waffle. It was just right.
Also today, we had to have things like our backpacks vacuumed before taking them with us on any expeditions. This was being done on Decks 5&7. Fortunately Morgan and I didn't need vacuuming.
The sky outside looks stormy and ice is still coming by. What awaits us tomorrow?
The Ice is floating by constantly, lots of different size bergs. The side thrusters are being used to push larger ones away
