Sunday 27.08.2023 We Walk on dry land Sutton Island, in the footsteps of the Inuit
Well its a lovely sunny day and we are going ashore to day at Sutton Island. It is a small uninhabited island but it has been regularly used by the Inuit for a long time. The first expedition crews went over to the island at about 5am, to check for any dangerous animals and to set up walking routes for us to follow. There is a lot of archaeology there. So we must keep to the right of the red flags along the route. The Expedition Team are along the route to show us interesting things that might have appeared. Some of them carry Rifles in case of Bears. Apparently no one has visited the island for 8 years so there could be some more archaeology visible. Our group Artic Foxes is going over at 10.40 so we had time to watch some of the other groups climbing to the top and back. Some people are mad enough to want to have an Artic dip in the sea when they get back to the Landing site. I an glad the Master and Missus aren't that mad. We will all keep dry hooray. Morgan and I are tucked up warmly in the backpack for our trip. Bit scary on the Zodiac as we are hanging over the edge in the backpack. It is only a short hop to the island and back. Master is the first off our rib and it took him a while to work out how the crew wanted him to exit the boat, 'slide bum to right and then legs over and out into the water'. This is called a wet landing so glad they have robust rubber wellies supplied by the ship. A quick briefing on the beach we are allowed an hour. Missus grabbed a couple of walking poles and we were off. The terrain was steeper than it looked from the ship and the Missus couldn't make it to the top so we stopped for a rest and the Master carried on to the top. He got quite warm, then it was time for us all to walk back to the beach, down hill is not easy.
2 lectures today of interest, ORCA Ocean Watchers. This is an app for recording what people see at sea and can be done from the shore as well. ORCA is a charity for all things regarding saving Oceans and their wildlife. There is a citizen science area to the app which is free but there is also a facility to take further qualifications and become an Ambassador for ORCA.
Well would you believe it. Master and Missus went to Fredheim again today and were forgotten completely, in fact they saw their order go to another table. They did complain and they think it was the fault of the two chiefs only doing half of the orders and not completing them. They were not happy.
Another talk today was about Adaptations of Artic Animals. This was a bit hard for me to follow so not too much to say about it.
Seen from the ship this evening a Skein of Snow Geese, Artic Skua and Eider on the water.
